Gutter questions, answered plainly
Cleaning, guards, repairs and drainage.
Frequently asked questions
How often should gutters be cleaned?
At least twice a year for most homes: after the fall leaf drop and again in late spring. Homes under heavy tree cover often need more.
What happens if I never clean my gutters?
They overflow, and the water lands where it does damage: the fascia boards, the beds, and the soil against the foundation. Packed gutters also get heavy and pull loose, and in winter the wet debris freezes.
Do gutter guards really work?
A guard matched to your trees and fitted to a clean, sound gutter keeps the trough from clogging. No guard is maintenance-free. Some need their top surface brushed off from time to time.
Why does my gutter overflow even though it is clean?
Usually a clogged downspout, a gutter that is not pitched toward the downspout, or one downspout trying to handle too much roof. We check all three.
Why is water dripping behind my gutter?
The gutter may have pulled away from the fascia, or water is running under the shingle edge and behind the gutter. Both are worth fixing before the fascia board rots.
Should downspouts drain right next to the house?
No. Water dumped at the foundation is a common cause of wet basements and crawl spaces. An extension or splash block that carries it a few feet out, onto ground sloping away, is a small and worthwhile fix.
Do you give written quotes?
