The downspout is where a gutter system succeeds or fails. A gutter can be spotless and still overflow if the downspout is packed with leaves at the elbow. And a downspout that drains perfectly but empties right against the foundation just moves the problem to your basement or crawl space.

What we do

  • Clear clogs at the top outlet and the bottom elbow
  • Flush each downspout to confirm it drains
  • Replace crushed, split or disconnected sections
  • Re-strap downspouts that have come loose from the wall
  • Add extensions or splash blocks so water lands away from the foundation
  • Add a downspout where one long run is carrying more water than one outlet can handle

Where the water ends up matters

Water dumped at the base of a wall soaks the soil next to the foundation. Over time that shows up as a damp basement, a wet crawl space, settling at the corners, or washed-out beds. Sending the water a few feet out onto ground that slopes away from the house is a small job that heads off a lot of trouble.

If you already have water in a crawl space or basement, gutters and downspouts are the first thing to rule out before anything bigger.

Questions people ask us

How do I know if my downspout is clogged?

Water spilling over the gutter near the downspout during rain, little or no water coming out the bottom, or a downspout that sounds solid when you tap it low down. The bottom elbow is the most common clog.

Can downspouts be buried and run underground?

Underground drain lines are a bigger job and can clog out of sight. We will look at what you have and tell you whether a surface extension does the job.
