Gutter guards in Lexington, KY
Guards chosen for the trees over your roof, fitted after a full clean-out and leak check.
Lexington neighborhoods have a lot of mature shade trees, and the trees decide which gutter guard works. A screen that handles big maple and oak leaves well can still let pine needles and seed pods through. A fine mesh stops nearly everything but needs its top surface brushed off from time to time. We look at what is actually falling on your roof before we recommend anything.
Matching the guard to the trees
| What is over your roof | What usually works | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Oaks, maples, sycamores (big flat leaves) | Perforated metal screen or mesh | Large leaves sit on top, dry out and blow off. Water goes through the openings. |
| Pines and other needle trees | Fine mesh | Needles slip through larger holes and lodge in the gutter. Fine mesh keeps them on top. |
| Sweetgum, maple seeds, tulip poplar seed cones | Fine mesh or tight screen | Small seed pods and “helicopters” pack into open gutters and wide-hole screens. |
| Few or no trees | Maybe no guard at all | Shingle grit and blown debris may only call for a yearly clean-out. We will say so. |
The details on each style, with the trade-offs, are on our gutter guard types page.
What we check before we fit anything
- Every run cleaned out by hand and the downspouts flushed
- Seams and corners for leaks, since a guard does nothing for a leaking joint
- Slope toward the downspouts, so water does not sit in a low spot
- Hangers and fasteners, since loose gutters get re-secured first
- The front edge of the roof, so the guard sits right with the shingles
The trees here
Fall is the big drop, usually from late October through November. Pin oaks are a known nuisance: many hold their dead leaves into winter and let them go a few at a time, which is how gutters cleaned in November fill up again by January. Spring brings maple seeds and tulip poplar flower parts.
If you are not sure what is over your house, the Fayette County Cooperative Extension office can help identify trees. Or point at the tree when we are there and we will tell you how its debris behaves in a gutter.

What guards will and will not do
Guards keep leaves and sticks out of the trough, which is where clogs and overflows start. They do not fix a leaking seam, a sagging run or a downspout that dumps water against the foundation. That is why we look at those first.
No guard is maintenance-free. Expect to brush the top of a mesh guard now and then under heavy tree cover. It is a far smaller job than cleaning out a packed gutter.
Questions people ask us
Will gutter guards handle a heavy downpour?
A guard that is fitted right lets water through as fast as the gutter can carry it in normal rain. In a very hard downpour, any gutter, with or without a guard, can overflow if the downspouts are undersized. If that is happening at your house we will tell you, and adding or enlarging a downspout is often the real fix.
Do I need guards on every gutter?
Not always. The runs under trees need them most. Runs on the open side of the house may only need a yearly cleaning. We quote it run by run so you can choose.
Do gutter guards void my roof warranty?
Some guard styles slide under the first row of shingles, which some shingle makers do not allow. Others attach to the gutter lip only. If your roof is still under a manufacturer warranty, tell us and we will use a style that does not disturb the shingles.
Can you put guards on old gutters?
If the gutters are sound, yes. If they leak at every seam or are pulling off the house, we will tell you that repair or replacement comes first. A guard on a failing gutter is wasted money.
